“Sonichronicle” presents an immersive ambisonic and luminous object display installation within Enschede’s historic bell tower of the Grote Kerk at the Oude Markt during the Van Haag tot Wal festival(2023). The project aims to explore the intersection of time and history through sound. By simulating the ambient soundscape of different historical eras and events in Enschede and the time signals that people relied upon, Sonichronicle becomes a sonic time machine. This immersive experience enables participants to immerse themselves in Enschede’s history, supplying a perceptible pulse of the city’s evolution through time.
Sonichronicle underscores the potential of immersive soundscapes in historical storytelling. Furthermore, the choice of location emphasizes carillon’s enduring role in preserving temporal and spiritual aspects of Enschede’s history. The project stands for a fusion of artistic creation and historical interpretation, aimed at eliciting a deeper and non-discursive understanding of urban heritage.
