Sound installation
Melkhal Pulse is an immersive auditory event featuring sound installations situated in an old milk facility in Enschede. The event showcases a dialogue between the artists, audiences, and the architecture, with a symphony of sounds from the past and present.
There were 14 loudspeakers and 2 microphones placed in the building. The fourteen speakers were separated into the ground, first, and second floors, randomly playing the sounds we designed based on an algorithm, with each floor having a different theme. The ground floor features sound design that simulates past milk factory operations. The theme of the first floor is based on our field recording samples from the Melkhal. Finally, the second floor represents the current ambient sound.
Meanwhile, two microphones capture the ambient sound in the building and the audience's visit, and then randomly play it on the loudspeakers on the second floor with a delay of about 60 seconds and a non-100% probability.
With these devices and sound design, we use the internal resonance of the building as a musical instrument, overlaying the history with the timelines, arousing the curiosity of people shopping in the Melkhal supermarket, making them stop and explore the building's story.
